Chapter Seven

“Bounty hunters?” Penelope repeated.

“Yes. They’re on the hunt for a desperado, no doubt, but I can’t tell you who it could be since I know all of the people in town and none of them are lawbreakers. Of that, I’m certain.”

“How about the ranchers?”

“Ranchers?”

“Sorry. I’m just thinking out loud. I just don’t understand why they’d be following me. I only spoke out of line by asking them one simple question. Can’t you do something, find out who they’re searching for?”

“You see, that’s the thing. Most bounty hunters come to the jail, look at the wanted posters and tell me who they’re looking for.”

“Perhaps they don’t want you to know. They may think someone else might find out and bring in the bad guy to jail.”

The sheriff sighed. “When bounty hunters bring in a bad guy, it’s his dead body they bring.” When Penelope’s eyes widened, he quickly apologized. “I’m sorry. I’m sure you didn’t want to hear that.”

“Thank you, Sheriff, for being honest and telling me that. Women are really too sheltered from the realities of life.”

“For good reason. If either Mr. or Mrs. Henry bothers you, please let me know. I’m aware of you and your sisters’ past, and I’m positive they’d have no reason to harass you,” the sheriff said as he headed out the door.

Penelope was glad to hear that, but she worried about who they might really be looking for. She hadn’t met anyone who looked as though they might be a desperado. Except for Morgan, her brain screamed. No, she couldn’t see Morgan as a lawbreaker. Just because she couldn’t check out his past didn’t mean he was wanted. There were plenty of people who picked up stakes and moved to new towns. Anyone who worked hard to get a ranch going was an honest man. Besides, if Morgan was wanted, why would he want to send for a mail-order bride?

So lost in thought was she that Penelope never even heard the door open and close. When a man cleared his throat, she was quite startled. She looked up then and into Morgan’s curious eyes.

“Is this a bad time?”

Penelope eased down in her chair. “No, why?”

“It’s just that you look a little pale.”

“Oh, that. I just came from my sister’s place. She had her baby while I was visiting you at your ranch yesterday.”

His eyes widened. “I’m sorry you missed it.”

“Don’t be, there were too many of us hovering over her anyway. She’s the first of us to have a baby.”

“How exciting for you. Let me congratulate you on the newest member of your family. Boy or girl?”

“Boy or girl, what?” When Morgan grinned, she added, “Sorry, boy. They named him Nelson after our father.”

“Is your father here in town, too?”

“No. Our father and mother died in a buggy crash in Ohio. It was pivotal. That’s why we’re here in Nevada.”

“For that, I’m glad. If it wasn’t for your opening up a matchmaker agency, I might never have been close to finding a potential bride.
